What's in this report?

This year, the report includes our analysis on the US-China  trade war, emerging market currency woes, the rise of the new-economy industries and many other topics that will be shaping developing countries in 2019.

Our EMIS and CEIC Insights teams have joined efforts this year to combine the macroeconomic fundamentals’ interpretation with industry analysis for a well-grounded prognosis for 2019.

We have also expanded our presence in key markets with more local analysts in China, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, and Poland, which allows us to have a finger on the pulse of local events as they unfold, from within the economy or in response to outside triggers.

As the world is waiting to hear the tune that will dominate 2019, we rest assured that we are well-equipped to resonate it as soon as it has aired.

China Taking the Slow Lane.jpg

Against the background of tumultuous previous years, the year 2018 was a placid one during which most of the world’s economies experienced solid growth. It has been a year, though, in which we have been hearing the growing rumble of war drums from different sides of the globe.

The American eagle and the Chinese dragon are in position and ready to engage in an all in battle. The repercussions of a full-blown trade war between the US and China can be enormous, affecting not only trade-dependent performance indicators in their home economies, but other economies as well.

To add to that, the war drums are measuring the beat of other major economic conflicts too - the UK breaking away from the EU, the Qatar-Saudi Arabia diplomatic crisis, and the US sanctions on Iran - and of locally brewing tensions such as the devaluation of the Turkish lira and the economic crisis in Brazil, which are set to escalate into the New Year.
