About the Report

  • Regional Overview
The Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) food and drink sector is a cornerstone of the region's manufacturing industry. According to the
EU Food and Drink Industry report for 2023, in Poland the industry generated a turnover of EUR 69.7bn, contributing EUR 11.4bn of value added, and employing approximately 392,700individuals across 17,586 companies.
Similarly, in Romania, the sector reported a turnover of EUR 15.2bn, with a value added of EUR 7.9bn, providing jobs for around 173,000 people within 10,617 enterprises. These figures underscore the food and beverage sector's role as a major employer and economic driver in the region.

  • Production

Between 2018-2024, the production of foods in CEE countries has followed a volatile trend. In 2021, there was a notable improvement in food production in CEE countries, with an average increase of 5.5% y/y. This increase was mainly led by Hungary (+8.3% y/y). This improvement weakened, but continued in 2022, with only Czech Republic experiencing a decline in food production (by 0.8% y/y). However, in 2023, overall food production worsened across all CEE countries, except Romania, with an average decrease of 3.5% y/y. In2024, food production again revived in all six of the featured countries in the CEE region, with an average increase of 5% y/y.
